Framing tips and tricks from a Professional !

pile Framing tips and tricks from a Pro

I used to “sight down” every stud at the store and only take the straight ones.  I have since learned that just because they are straight when you purchase them, that does not mean they will stay straight until you are ready for drywall.  Furthermore, any time you order lumber and have it delivered, you will not have this luxury of choosing.  So I came to terms with the problem and just came up with a solution.

The solution is simple.  There are many places that require two or more studs nailed together.  For example the framed openings for doorways, windows, and at point loads.  Use these locations as the chance to reverse the cambers to force both studs straight.

Here’s how:

Sight down the boards and set one 2×4(6), with the camber facing down, (like the bottom of a rocking chair).  Then place the other right next to it, with the camber facing up (opposite the other).

Line up the ends and nail the boards together just as you normally would, working from one end to the other forcing the studs even.

This works magically! Two crooked boards nailed together can result in a  perfectly straight and stable 3x ready to use.

Forget looking down each stud. All those straight ones you picked won’t stay straight for very long anyways!  Just leave behind the studs that you can see are crooked without sighting down it.  Which by the way, are always at the very top of the pile!
